Assessment

A speech-language assessment conducted by a speech-language pathologist is an essential step in understanding and addressing specific communication challenges. At Cabinet JBM, an assessment is always required before beginning speech-language therapy or language stimulation services. If you already have a recent and comprehensive report, it may not be necessary to complete a new assessment. The speech-language pathologist will review the report and advise you on the next steps.

That said, here is what you can expect during an assessment:

Tests and observations: The speech-language pathologist will conduct a series of standardized tests and/or clinical observations to assess various aspects of language, such as comprehension, expression, pronunciation, and the functional use of language in everyday life.

Analysis of results: The speech-language pathologist will analyze the results and, depending on the type of assessment, prepare a written report. This step may take between 2 to 4 weeks, or longer during periods of high demand. The speech-language pathologist will provide an overview of expected timelines during the assessment appointment.

Results presentation: Once the report is completed, the speech-language pathologist will schedule an appointment to present and explain the results. They may also provide recommendations for next steps, such as speech-language therapy or language stimulation services. This results presentation appointment, which may last up to 45 minutes, is generally conducted online via the Zoom platform and is included in the assessment fee.

Practical Information:

  • The duration of the assessment varies depending on age and the nature of the request and may range from 1 to 6 hours. Longer assessments are typically completed over multiple appointments.

  • Fees are also determined based on age and the nature of the request. An overview of fees will be provided by the speech-language pathologist during the service planning appointment.

  • The assessment may be conducted virtually via the Zoom platform or in person, depending on your preferences and the speech-language pathologist’s availability.

In addition to providing precise and detailed speech-language conclusions, this assessment allows for the development of a personalized speech-language therapy plan. The goal is to ensure that each intervention is targeted and effective, based on the unique needs of each client. This approach helps maximize progress in communication while ensuring that services are fully tailored to the individual.

Fees and Insurance

Assessment fees are communicated in advance and, by default, are charged in a single payment following the first assessment appointment. Upon request — and only if the request is made before the first assessment appointment — payments could be split according to the number of scheduled appointments.

As the assessment is conducted by a speech-language pathologist — even within pathways that include a communication and language assistant — it is generally eligible for partial or full reimbursement through insurance plans.

However, it is the client’s responsibility to verify reimbursement conditions with their insurer before the assessment begins and to inform the speech-language pathologist accordingly. Having this information in advance makes it possible to determine whether billing arrangements could facilitate reimbursement.

When insurance details are provided prior to the start of the assessment, it may sometimes be possible to adjust billing to meet insurer requirements — always in compliance with professional and ethical standards and reflecting services actually provided. Please note that any receipt already issued is final and cannot be modified.
